June 2025 - France styrenic packaging ban repeal
The French Parliament has officially repealed the provision in Article 23 of the Climate and Resilience Act of 22 August 2021, which would have modified the French Environmental Code, (Article L541-15-10 – III paragraph) by banning non-recyclable styrenic packaging from 1 January 2025.
This decision aligns national legislation with the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), reaffirming the French government’s commitment to avoiding excessive implementation beyond EU requirements. This move therefore offers clarity and reassurance to industry professionals, allowing them to focus on implementing the recycling of styrenic packaging by 2035, as defined in the PPWR.
Thus, in the meantime, styrenic packaging can continue to be marketed under the same conditions as other plastic packaging.
This provision is effective as of May 3, 2025.
