Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH)
As of May 31, 2008, the European REACH (regulation EC No 1907/2006 of the European Parliament and of the council concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) applies to all chemical substances produced or imported within the European Union. This means that only substances registered by the manufacturer or importer under the REACH regulation are authorized in cosmetic products intended for sale on the European market. Moreover, as importer of a finished product, you are also considered an importer of all ingredients/substances contained in it and may need to register them. This REACH obligation applies to almost all types of products including Cosmetics, Detergents, Biocides, Room fragrances, etc…. (Medicinal, Food or Feed products are excluded)
Details on the requirement for finished cosmetic products can be found in this article on our Blog.
Since the core principle of the REACH regulation is “no data, no market”, it can have a significant impact on compagnies, including cosmetic brands in that the trading of products whose REACH traceability has not been approved can be refused. BIORIUS offers support to all members of the cosmetic market supply chain (ingredient suppliers, manufacturers, brands and distributors) to assess and fulfill their REACH obligations.
