ECHA Proposal to Ban Octocrylene: Public Consultation Now Open

October 2025 - ECHA proposal to ban octocrylene in cosmetic products

Octocrylene, a UV filter widely used in sunscreens and various cosmetic products, is now under regulatory scrutiny. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has issued a proposal to drastically restrict its use due to concerns over its potential harmful effects on the environment and the availability of safer alternatives.

Proposed Restriction

Under the draft restriction, cosmetic products containing octocrylene at concentrations equal to or greater than 0.001% w/w would no longer be allowed to be placed on the market or used.

If adopted, this measure would apply 24 months after the regulation officially enters into force, giving the industry a two-year transition period.

Public Consultation

As part of the decision-making process, a public consultation is open from 24 September 2025 to 24 March 2026. This consultation allows stakeholders, including cosmetic companies, industry associations, and the scientific community, to provide feedback on the proposal.
