GMO-free Certification for Cosmetics

Introduction

Clean, green, natural, vegan, organic, gluten-free… If these keywords seem familiar to you, it is because formulae unharmful to human health and the environment are nowadays important to the cosmetic industry. This clean beauty wave meets an unprecedented boom: to reach a large audience from the youth to older generations, brands must adapt to this new beauty norm.

Despite the success these new allegations have, they are in fact uncontrolled by the authorities. As a result, certifications are the only solution to back these claims to your clients, allowing to share transparent and trustworthy information about your products. This article aims to clarify the GMO-free certification which can substantiate the GMO-free claim.

What is a GMO?

According to the EC 2011/18 directive, a GMO or Genetically Modified Organism is “an organism, with the exception of human beings, in which the genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by multiplication and/or natural recombination”. Genetic modification techniques include recombinant deoxyribonucleic acid techniques, techniques involving the direct incorporation into an organism of externally prepared hereditary material and cell fusion or hybridization techniques.

Why is this cosmetic certification so important?

To this day, GMO have been controlled in the scope of human food and livestock feed, but there is no regulation curbing their use in the cosmetic field. Thus, your GMO products can be proved as such only thanks to certifications, in the same way as organic, vegan or reef-friendly products.

Organic and natural cosmetics charters and requirements specifications already forbid GMO, but under different parameters. If you want to guarantee a total absence of GMO in a formula, organic or natural certifications are not fit for you. Moreover, long INCI lists can be hard to understand for an average consumer. A clear proof of the absence of GMO could reassure the client on top of differentiating your brand from your competitors. A confused consumer can hesitate to choose your product, but an informed decision-making can make wonders!
